What Is A Water Softener System?
Water is considered “hard” when there is a significant amount of calcium, magnesium, iron, limestone or other minerals in the water. Once the water evaporates, you get either “scaling” (crusty white residue) on your fixtures, shower doors, dishes or orange stains. Orange stains are mostly from the iron that is present in your water source. All of these minerals can clog and damage pipes. Unfortunately, these minerals are very common and can be found in both city water supplies and well water.
Not only do these minerals stick to your fixtures and water using appliances causing costly repair issues, lowering their efficiency and shortening their life… these minerals also end up in your body and on your hair.
Water softener systems remove these minerals from your water source by a process called “ion exchange”. Electrostatically charged plastic beads called “resin” attract and capture the unwanted minerals… leaving your water “softer”, healthier, and cleaner. After all the resin is saturated with the captured minerals, they are rinsed with a brine of sodium which releases the unwanted minerals down your drain and away from your house.

TYPES OF WATER SOFTENERS SYSTEMS
Water conditioning/softeners can be installed under the sink for direct use for your kitchen or installed as a whole house system (usually located outside, in a basement or by your water heater).
They are classified in five different categories:
Manual: There are several types of manual softeners. You open and close valves to control the frequency, rate and time length of the recharging or softening process.
Semi-automatic: You initiate only the recharging cycle. A button is pushed when the softener needs recharging and the unit will control and complete the recharging or softening process.
Automatic: An automatic softener usually is equipped with a timer that initiates the recharging or softening cycle as well as every step in the process. You only need to set the timer and add salt when necessary. This is the most popular type of softener.
Demand initiated regeneration (DIR): All operations are initiated and performed automatically in response to the demand for softened water. DIR systems generally have two softening tanks and a brine tank. While one tank is softening, the other tank is recharging.
Off-site regeneration: Generally used in rental units, a pre-owned softening tank is physically replaced with a recharged tank. Spent or used softening tanks are then recharged at a central location.
