DID YOU KNOW?

A family of 4 generates an average of 35 lbs of food waste each week or about 2,000 lbs a year!

GARBAGE DISPOSAL TIPS

  • Try to run the garbage disposal every other day with cold water to keep the blades from rusting.
  • Clean your disposal every two weeks using rock salt and ice cubes as abrasives then mixing a cup of baking soda with a half cup of vinegar so remove odors and kill bacteria.
  • Use plenty of cold water when using the disposal to ensure all of the waste particles are flushed out.
  • Avoid using your disposal with fibrous or hard foods, only soft foods are preferable. Bones will damage the blades and fibers will tangle within the blades causing jams.

WHAT CAUSES PROBLEMS WITH MY GARBAGE DISPOSAL?

There is a wide variety of garbage disposal problems that we encounter every week. Here is a short list:

REMEMBER!

IT IS DANGEROUS TO PUT YOUR HAND INSIDE A DISPOSAL.

ALWAYS UNPLUG OR TURN POWER OFF WHEN WORKING ON A DISPOSAL.

Garbage Disposal Does Not Turn On

Try resetting the garbage disposal (reset button can be found at the bottom of the garbage disposal) and check your electrical service panel to see if a breaker has been tripped. Check GFI outlet and reset if needed. You can also check the wires for any loose connections. A switch replacement may be a solution if the garbage disposal is not triggering the motor.

Garbage Disposal Hums But Does Not Grind

This usually is the result of the flywheel inside the disposal being jammed. Look for a foreign object such as a coin, plastic, twist tie or staple. Remove the item with pliers or a grasping tool. Your disposal may have a hex key jam clearing tool. Look for it under the sink or taped to the disposal. Check for a slot at the bottom of the disposer where the tool can be inserted and turned back and forth to clear the jam.

Garbage Disposal Is Leaking

Leaks from your garbage disposal can occur in any area, from the sink flange, dishwasher hose, drainpipe, or bottom. To address these leaks look into cracked seals, worn gaskets, deteriorated putty, and loose hoses and bolts.

Garbage Disposal Is Not Draining Properly

A sink full of water and waste can become a headache for many homeowners but there are ways to deal with a garbage disposal that has a clog. Like any other blockage, the disposal will need to be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. If the clog persists, then the problem lies further down the drain line.

While some of these problems can be solved with a simple reset, there are others that require a more in-depth troubleshooting. Few people realize that garbage disposals are only designed to handle light food residue that is rinsed from plates and cooking utensils before they go into the dishwasher. Large quantities of food and debris going into disposers can overwhelm them and clog the kitchen sink drain. Call Option One, your local garbage disposal repair expert, for fair, prompt, and exceptional service.
